It was based on the F10-generation 5 Series, and it swapped its predecessor's naturally-aspirated V10 for a twin-turbocharged V8, though it offered enthusiasts a generous bump in horsepower and torque. Rear-wheel drive was the only configuration available, but buyers in the United States could choose between an automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual.
- Power for this M5 comes from an "S63" 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, rated at 560 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
